OpenAI gives verified university students in the United States and Canada $100 in Codex credits. The credits land on your ChatGPT account as 2,500 credits and expire 12 months after the grant date. We read the offer page on October 2, 2026.

How to claim

Who qualifies: current students enrolled at degree-granting universities in the US or Canada who also live in the US or Canada when they claim. One credit offer per student. You need a ChatGPT account on the Free, Go, Plus or Pro plan.

  1. Open chatgpt.com/codex/students and click Claim now.
  2. Sign in with the ChatGPT account you want the credits on. A personal account works. It doesn't need to be tied to your school.
  3. Verify your student status through SheerID. You use your university email during verification.
  4. Open the usage page in ChatGPT. You should see 2,500 credits, which is $100.

If your account has more than one workspace, the credits go to your personal workspace.

What the credits do

These are ChatGPT credits, not API credits. They extend your Codex usage past the limits included in your ChatGPT plan, so you still use your plan's allowance first. If you run out of credits, you can buy more.

The catch

  • The credits expire 12 months after the grant date. Unused credits after that can't be used.
  • They are not API credits. They don't work with the OpenAI API.
  • It is US and Canada only. The page requires you to be a resident of one of them at the time you claim.
  • The page doesn't state an end date for the offer or whether a card is needed. Read the verification screens before you continue.

Questions people ask

Do I need a separate Codex account? No. Codex is included in your ChatGPT account. If you don't have one, create one first.

Does my ChatGPT account need to be linked to my school? No. You can use a personal account, but you must verify with your university email.

Is this the same as the ChatGPT Plus student offer? No. That one is $0 for four months of Plus for US students and ends October 31. The Codex credits are a separate offer. Our ChatGPT Plus student page has the steps.
