Anthropic is taking Claude Cowork off your desktop and putting it on Anthropic's own servers. The rollout started July 7, 2026, with beta access going first to Claude Max subscribers ($100/month and up), and wider plans getting access in the following weeks. The practical result: Cowork sessions keep running after you close your laptop.
What actually changes
Cowork originally ran as a desktop app, using your machine's own resources to execute agentic tasks like file organization, research, and multi-step workflows. Under the new setup, those sessions run remotely instead. Close the lid mid-task and the work keeps going. Scheduled jobs can fire even if none of your personal devices are turned on.
Anthropic is also merging Claude's regular chat interface with Cowork into one space, so both draw on the same files and context instead of living as separate tools you switch between.

Who's actually using it, and for what
Anthropic published usage data from 1.2 million anonymized sessions across more than 600,000 organizations, and the breakdown cuts against the assumption that agentic tools are mainly a developer thing. Software engineering accounted for just 8.7% of active Cowork sessions. Over 90% of logged activity was standard knowledge work: research, document drafting, scheduling, the kind of file and task management that has nothing to do with writing code.
That matters for how you should think about Cowork. It isn't Claude Code with a UI slapped on top, even though that's roughly how it was pitched at launch back in January. The actual usage pattern looks more like a general-purpose assistant for office work that happens to be capable of coding when asked.
The usage boost, and why the timing lines up
To mark the mobile and web rollout, Anthropic extended its doubled Cowork usage limits through August 5. If you've been holding off on testing Cowork because of usage caps, this is the window to actually push on it before the limits reset to normal.
Worth noting: this usage boost is a different thing entirely from the Claude Code weekly usage boost (running through August 19) or the [Sonnet 5 intro API pricing](https://questloops.com/blog/claude-sonnet-5-explained-what-changed-what-it-costs-and-who-should-switch) that ends August 31. If you're on a lower tier, you'll get access as Anthropic expands the rollout, and there's no indication yet of when that finishes for everyone. The unified chat-and-Cowork space is the bigger structural change long-term. Once your files and context are shared across both, the distinction between "asking Claude a question" and "having Claude do a task" starts to blur, which seems to be the point.
